Jonah Hill, in a significant return to the public spotlight, made a surprise appearance at SiriusXM’s Smartless LIVE event on Saturday night at the Palladium in Hollywood. This engagement marked his first extended, solo interview in several years, offering a candid glimpse into his recent hiatus and his renewed enthusiasm for comedy. Hill expressed his eagerness to reconnect with audiences through humor, emphasizing a personal journey toward happiness that has reignited his creative drive.
The actor, who has been largely out of the public eye while focusing on his mental health and family, shared his perspective on his career trajectory and his current mindset. "I’ve been gone for a while, so I’m kind of coming back, and I’m excited because I got all, like, serious for a while and I wasn’t as happy," Hill confided to the Smartless hosts – Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes. He elaborated on a period of introspection that preceded his recent directorial debut with the Apple TV+ film Outcome. This phase, while personally beneficial, led him to a place where he now craves the joy and connection of making people laugh. "And then I had my family and I got happy, and now all I want to do is be funny again. That’s why I said yes [to being on Smartless]. I’m, like, I want to go fucking be funny in front of a crowd and that’d be awesome."
The hour-plus conversation delved into the breadth of Hill’s impressive career, tracing his evolution from his formative roles to his more recent directorial endeavors. The dynamic between Hill and the Smartless trio, particularly his acknowledged mentor Bateman, fostered an intimate and engaging atmosphere. The discussion spanned his debut in David O. Russell’s I Heart Huckabees, his breakout performances in Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up and the seminal teen comedy Superbad, and his critically acclaimed, Oscar-nominated turns in Moneyball and Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street.
Debunking the "Nepo Baby" Narrative
Amidst the career retrospective, Hill humorously addressed the prevalent "nepo baby" label, a sentiment he and his wife, Olivia Millar, find amusing. He clarified his familial background, noting his father, Richard Feldstein, is a highly respected accountant and business manager who has represented prominent music acts such as Guns N’ Roses and Maroon 5. This assertion serves to underscore his personal journey and hard-earned success in the industry.

The Genesis of a Hollywood Career: I Heart Huckabees
Hill credits Jake Hoffman, son of acting legend Dustin Hoffman, with playing a pivotal role in securing his initial film opportunity. Dustin Hoffman, recognizing Hill’s innate comedic talent, facilitated an audition for David O. Russell’s I Heart Huckabees. "Jake’s dad, Dustin, was like, ‘You should be a comedic actor,’" Hill recalled. "I was just trying to be funny all the time. … So, Dustin was like, ‘I’m doing this movie. I got you an audition.’" This introduction led to a role alongside a stellar ensemble cast, including Dustin Hoffman himself, Jason Schwartzman, Lily Tomlin, Jude Law, Mark Wahlberg, Naomi Watts, Isabelle Huppert, and Jean Smart.
Behind the Scenes: The Infamous I Heart Huckabees Set
Bateman steered the conversation towards the often-turbulent production of I Heart Huckabees, referencing widely publicized reports of intense on-set conflict, particularly between director David O. Russell and Lily Tomlin. Hill offered a candid, albeit lighthearted, assessment of the atmosphere. "David O. was fucking nuts at the time," he stated, but quickly tempered this by praising Russell’s directorial prowess and personal demeanor. "He was buck wild and I’m like homies with him. He’s awesome. Super nice guy. But in that moment in life, and I’ve had my own, trust me, he was buck wild, dude. He was screaming at Lily Tomlin. It’s online and shit. And he’ll talk about it. He’s cool. He’s one of the best directors ever. I mean Flirting With Disaster and Three Kings, he’s so goated. It’s insane."
Hill further recounted an incident on his very first day on set, where he witnessed a physical altercation between Russell and K.K. Barrett, the production designer. "Everyone’s screaming at each other," Hill said. "The first time I walked on set, him and K.K. Barrett, the production designer, were joking around wrestling and then it turned into a real fight. It was like joking that turned into a fight, and these guys were fighting and they were setting up my first scene to act. I was like, Hollywood is so tight."
David O. Russell himself has spoken about the demanding nature of the I Heart Huckabees production, describing it to IndieWire as a "party" with the exception of the explosive fight day, which he acknowledged became the most remembered event. He further noted that the experience, though "painful" and leading to a period of feeling "lost," ultimately contributed to his growth as a filmmaker.
The experience profoundly influenced Hill’s approach to filmmaking. He revealed a commitment made at that time: should he ever step behind the camera, he would hire Barrett. This commitment came full circle with his recent film Outcome, where Barrett served as the production designer. "He did my newest movie, Outcome," Hill shared. "Full circle, 20 years later. The greatest production designer ever."

A Psychedelic Reunion: Directing Martin Scorsese
Hill’s Outcome also provided him with another extraordinary "pinch-me" moment: directing Martin Scorsese. The legendary filmmaker made a cameo appearance in the Hollywood satire, reprising a role as a representative of Keanu Reeves’ character, and reuniting with Hill after their collaboration on The Wolf of Wall Street. "He came in so prepared. Honestly, the whole thing was so psychedelic," Hill described the experience of directing Scorsese, likening it to childbirth due to its surreal and profound nature. "Him coming to set and me directing him. It was so psychedelic. It was like childbirth. [I was like], ‘This is so trippy.’"
Reflecting on the actor’s perspective, Hill noted the inevitable "withdrawal" actors experience after working under Scorsese’s direction, as subsequent directors, however competent, struggle to match the benchmark set by the master.
Future Endeavors and the Enduring Power of Comedy
Looking ahead, both Hill and Russell are poised for new releases. David O. Russell is set to release Madden by year’s end, featuring a star-studded cast including Nicolas Cage, Christian Bale, Shane Gillis, Will Ferrell, Sienna Miller, and Kathryn Hahn. Jonah Hill’s directorial and starring vehicle, Cut Off, co-starring Kristen Wiig, is slated for release this summer.
The Smartless podcast, hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes, continues to be a popular platform for candid conversations with a wide array of celebrities. New episodes are released every Monday, offering listeners continued insights into the lives and careers of prominent figures in the entertainment industry. Hill’s appearance underscored his current embrace of comedy and his desire to re-engage with the public through his signature wit and humor, signaling a vibrant new chapter in his already illustrious career. The event, held at the historic Palladium, provided a fitting backdrop for Hill’s return to the public conversation, a space he has clearly navigated with thoughtful introspection and renewed purpose.
