Using Artificial Intelligence to Generate Affective Images Methodology and Initial Library

In a significant advancement for the field of affective science, an international consortium of 46 researchers has demonstrated that generative artificial intelligence can produce customized imagery capable of eliciting specific emotional responses in humans with the same efficacy as traditional photography. The study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Advances in Methods and Practices in Psychological Science, marks a pivotal shift in how behavioral scientists may soon conduct experiments, moving away from static, decades-old image databases toward dynamic, culturally adaptive, and demographically diverse visual stimuli. Led by Maciej Behnke, an associate professor of psychology at Adam Mickiewicz University, the research addresses a long-standing "diversity crisis" in psychological research, where the majority of experimental materials have historically been centered on Western, industrialized contexts.

The Evolution of Affect induction and the Limitations of Legacy Media

For decades, psychological research has relied on a process known as affect induction to study the human condition. By exposing participants to specific visual stimuli—such as a photograph of a snarling dog to induce fear or a breathtaking landscape to induce awe—scientists can observe how emotional states influence decision-making, cognitive performance, and physiological reactions. However, the most widely used image sets, such as the International Affective Picture System (IAPS), were largely developed in the late 20th century.

These legacy databases face three primary challenges: technological obsolescence, lack of diversity, and staticity. Many older photographs suffer from low resolution that appears grainy on modern high-definition displays. Furthermore, the fashion, technology, and hairstyles depicted in these images are often dated, which can inadvertently distract participants or break the "immersion" required for genuine emotional elicitation. Perhaps most critically, these databases are overwhelmingly "WEIRD"—an acronym used in social sciences to describe data drawn from Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic populations. A participant in rural Kenya or urban Japan may not respond to a Western-centric image of "joy" or "attachment" with the same intensity as a participant in the United States, potentially skewing global psychological data.

Methodology: Bridging Computer Science and Affective Psychology

The genesis of this study was rooted in a unique interdisciplinary approach. After securing tenure in Poland, lead author Maciej Behnke pursued a bachelor’s degree in computer science to bridge the gap between psychological theory and emerging technological tools. This academic synthesis allowed the research team to leverage the capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) and diffusion-based image generators.

The researchers utilized ChatGPT-4o to analyze and deconstruct the descriptions of existing, validated emotional photographs. These refined descriptions were then used as prompts for generative AI tools, specifically Midjourney and Freepik. The goal was not merely to replicate existing photos but to create a new, expansive library of 847 distinct images designed to trigger 12 specific emotional states: amusement, awe, anger, attachment love, craving, disgust, excitement, fear, joy, neutral, nurturant love, and sadness.

To ensure the images were scientifically rigorous and culturally sensitive, the team employed a "human-in-the-loop" model. Rather than allowing the AI to operate autonomously, local cultural experts from various regions reviewed the generated outputs. This collaborative process allowed for the adaptation of base images into six broad cultural contexts: Asian, African, Arabic, Indian, Latin American, and Western. Furthermore, the researchers generated matching variations that adjusted the sex and age of the individuals depicted in the scenes, ensuring that the stimuli could be tailored to the specific demographic profile of any given study participant.

Experimental Design and Quantitative Findings

To validate the efficacy of these AI-generated images, the team conducted six separate experiments involving a massive sample of 2,470 participants recruited from 58 different countries. This scale represents one of the most geographically diverse validation studies in the history of affective science.

During the trials, participants were shown a mix of traditional photographs and the new AI-generated images. Each image was displayed for precisely four seconds to ensure a standardized exposure time. Following each viewing, participants utilized a Likert scale (ranging from one to seven) to rate the intensity of the emotions they experienced. They also provided data on valence (whether the feeling was positive or negative) and arousal (whether the feeling was calming or energizing).

The statistical analysis revealed several key findings:

  1. Equivalent Efficacy: In almost every category, AI-generated images were as effective at inducing the intended emotion as traditional photographs.
  2. Superiority in Positive Affect: For positive emotions, such as amusement and awe, the AI-generated pictures actually outperformed traditional photographs, producing statistically significant stronger emotional responses.
  3. Cultural Resonance: When participants viewed images that had been culturally adjusted to match their own background, they reported higher emotional intensity. This confirms the hypothesis that "contextual fit" is a vital component of emotional stimulus.
  4. Demographic Flexibility: Changing the age or sex of the people within an image did not dilute its emotional impact, suggesting that researchers can personalize stimuli to match a participant’s own demographic without losing the core emotional trigger.

Technical Constraints and the Role of AI Safety Filters

Despite the overall success of the AI-generated library, the study identified specific areas where current technology struggles. One notable finding was that AI-generated images were slightly less effective at triggering high-intensity negative emotions, such as profound sadness or intense anger, compared to traditional photography.

The researchers attributed this to the "safety filters" and ethical guardrails implemented by AI companies like OpenAI and Midjourney. These filters are designed to prevent the generation of graphic, violent, or deeply upsetting content. While these protections are necessary for public-facing commercial tools, they present a challenge for scientists who need to study the full spectrum of human emotion, including distress and horror.

Additionally, the researchers noted occasional technical artifacts common in current generative AI, such as "uncanny valley" effects where faces appear unnaturally symmetrical or attractive, and anatomical errors in complex details like human hands. These limitations highlight why human oversight remains indispensable in the creation of scientific stimuli.

Analysis of Implications: The Future of Personalized Psychology

The implications of this research extend far beyond the laboratory. By proving that AI can generate effective, culturally nuanced emotional stimuli, the study paves the way for a more inclusive and accurate era of psychological science.

Personalization of Therapy and Research
The ability to generate personalized stimuli could revolutionize clinical settings. For example, exposure therapy for phobias could be enhanced by generating images tailored to a patient’s specific fears and cultural context. In a research setting, the "one-size-fits-all" approach to stimuli can be replaced with "just-in-time" generation, where an AI creates a bespoke set of images for each participant based on their life experiences and demographic profile.

Large-Scale Collaborative Science
The involvement of 46 scientists from around the globe underscores a growing trend toward "Big Science" in psychology. By moving away from small-scale, localized studies and toward massive, multi-country collaborations, the field can produce findings that are truly representative of the global human experience. This study serves as a blueprint for how international teams can utilize technology to overcome geographical and cultural barriers.

Ethical and Philosophical Considerations
The study also raises important questions about the power of AI to influence human affect. If AI can reliably trigger specific emotions in a controlled experiment, the same technology could be used by advertisers or social media platforms to manipulate user emotions with high precision. Behnke’s emphasis on the "human-in-the-loop" model serves as an ethical reminder that while AI is a powerful tool for creation, the responsibility for its application and the interpretation of its effects remains a human endeavor.

Conclusion and Future Directions

The research team has already begun looking toward the next frontier: dynamic stimuli. While still images are effective, human emotion is often driven by movement and narrative. The team plans to investigate whether AI can generate short-form video content that maintains the same level of emotional control and cultural adaptability as the current image library. Additionally, they are exploring the use of AI models to predict how a specific individual might react to an image before it is even shown, further refining the accuracy of emotional induction.

As AI technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, the library of images created for this study will likely require frequent updates. However, the methodology established—combining LLM-based prompting, diffusion generation, and cross-cultural human expertise—provides a robust framework for the future of affective science. The study successfully argues that AI is not a replacement for human researchers but a sophisticated instrument that, when wielded with cultural and ethical sensitivity, can unlock deeper insights into the complexities of the human mind.
